珠海海洋论坛第18期将于2025年5月15日15:30在南方海洋实验室D203会议室举办。本次论坛将由Prof. Kay I. Ohshima作 “History and recent progress on the 4th Antarctic Bottom Water: Cape Darnley Bottom Water” 主题报告。

报告摘要:Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) originates from dense shelf water (DSW), which forms due to brine rejection during sea-ice production. Our research indicates that the Cape Darnley Polynya (CDP) ranks second in sea-ice production and was instrumental in revealing the 4th AABW formation zone during our 2008–2009 mooring studies. Moorings deployed within the CDP in 2010–2011 uncovered dominant underwater frazil ice penetrating to about 100 m, creating an efficient ice production system. Satellite measurements confirm frequent deep frazil penetration in the CDP, identifying it as a significant AABW source. Observations in an offshore canyon (2019–2020) reveal that a downslope current, carrying cold, dense water, instigates marked subinertial variability in bottom-intensified flow with a 4–5 day period. Driven by a second-mode coastally trapped wave, this variability promotes mixing of dense shelf water with modified Circumpolar Deep Water, ultimately enhancing AABW formation.

嘉宾简介:Professor Kay I. Ohshima of the Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University—and a Council Member of the Oceanographic Society of Japan—has long dedicated his career to advancing our understanding of polar ocean. He participated in the wintering phase of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (1990–1992) and later directed the Joint Japanese–Russian–U.S. Research Cruises of the Okhotsk Sea (1998–2001). Through these efforts, he elucidated key features of the Okhotsk Sea, including its ocean circulation, the formation of dense water via sea-ice production, and the subsequent impact on the North Pacific. Moreover, during several Southern Ocean cruises aboard the R/V Hakuho-maru and T/V Umitaka-maru, Ohshima and his team discovered the fourth formation area of Antarctic Bottom Water (Ohshima et al. 2013) and unraveled its formation process (Ohshima et al. 2022). His group has also developed an innovative algorithm that integrates satellite passive microwave data with heat budget calculations to produce the first global mapping of sea-ice production.
