The Model Development Group was established in November 2021, adhering to the concept of "To be the first or the best", and facing to the most frontier, original and unique scientific and technological issues in the marine environmental forecasting field. There are 5 scientists, 1 research assistant and 12 graduate students. Members of the group have been engaging in numerical simulation, data assimilation, forecast and prediction of ocean circulations, Typhoon warning, ecological dynamics and artificial intelligence oceanography for a long time, and built up several regional marine environment forecasting systems in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau great bay area. More than 70 papers and 3 books have been published. Several scientific research projects have been undertaken, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Guangdong, and the independent projects of the SML.
This group will employ the advantages of both the traditional "theory driven" and novel "data driven" research paradigms, and fully combine the prior physical oceanography knowledges, big data, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to build up a physics-informed deep neural network, and build up an internationally advanced intelligent marine forecasting large model for the South China Sea and Guangdong-HongKong-Macao Great Bay Area, with fast computing speed, high simulation accuracy and data-knowledge coupled.
